Lyapunov characteristic exponent calculation for finite element discretized models
In many applications in engineering and science, it is important to know whether the response of a nonlinear system is chaotic. This characterization is possible by the evaluation of the one-dimensional Lyapunov characteristic exponent (LCE). In this paper, a numerical procedure to calculate the LCE of continuous systems discretized using finite element methods is presented.
متن کاملAn Eulerian approach for computing the finite time Lyapunov exponent
We propose efficient Eulerian methods for approximating the finite-time Lyapunov exponent (FTLE). The idea is to compute the related flow map using the Level Set Method and the Liouville equation. There are several advantages of the proposed approach. Unlike the usual Lagrangian-type computations, the resulting method requires the velocity field defined only at discrete locations. No interpolat...
متن کاملFTLE Computation Beyond First-Order Approximation
We present a framework for different approaches to finite-time Lyapunov exponent (FTLE) computation for 2D vector fields, based on the advection of seeding circles. On the one hand it unifies the popular flow map approach with techniques based on the evaluation of distinguished trajectories, such as renormalization. On the other hand it allows for the exploration of their order of approximation...
متن کاملLocalized Finite-time Lyapunov Exponent for Unsteady Flow Analysis
The Finite-time Lyapunov Exponent (FTLE) is a measure for the rate of separation of particles in time-dependent flow fields. It provides a valuable tool for the analysis of unsteady flows. Commonly it is defined based on the flow map, analyzing the separation of trajectories of nearby particles over a finite-time span. This paper proposes a localized definition of the FTLE using the Jacobian ma...
متن کاملAnalysis and Modeling of an Experimental Device by Finite-Time Lyapunov Exponent Method
In this paper, we investigate the transport and mixing process of the batch mixers with two different configurations, the centered-blade and offset-blade mixers, by using a dynamical system approach. The 2-D velocity fields of the mixers measured using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) are used to identify the Lagrangian coherent structures (LCSs). The results show that the LCSs separate the phy...
